Although most of our school work will be done at Memaw’s house while my husband and I work, I feel like a central, dedicated space in our home is helpful in creating a productive learning environment.

When we began homeschooling last spring, we decided to convert our spare dining room into a homeschool classroom. I began with items that seemed practical but also made things more convenient for myself. This desk is my central location, supplying space for all things organization and budgeting. I enjoy having this space to keep all the projects I’m working on organized, and my kids know this is MY space!

I purchased this storage tower to house things like extra printer paper, craft material, and the printer for easy access.

This caddy holds all of our pens, little scissors, and hole punch.

I also chose to purchase a small white board, USA map, electric pencil sharpener, cork boards, and containers to house pencils, crayons and dry-erase markers.

To give my kids some age/grade appropriate references, I created (and am in the process of continuing to create) pieces of “classroom decor” like the alphabet and multiplication posters. We have a monthly calendar, days of the week, months of the year and shapes, as well.

I’d also love to have a table dedicated to school so that my kitchen table isn’t overrun with school work and projects. I’m having a little harder time justifying this expense, as we aren’t really doing much school work at home right now.

In my dreams, when I no longer need to work full time (😂) I’d like to incorporate some big throw floor pillows or bean bags so the kids can swap up seating arrangements, especially for things like reading and independent work. For now, we will continue to utilize the kitchen table, the school room rug or their bedroom seating. The kids are pretty easy to please in that aspect.

I love the idea of having a dedicated school space, even though we don’t do a lot of work at home. It helps keep school things separate from everyday clutter and helps me with organization. If you don’t have a spare room, or just don’t see the need for a separate space, there are so many ways to create the best learning environment for your kids, too!
